History

Sofia was found in the 1st century AD. It happened after the city was the conquest by the Romans. It was an important administrative and trading center of Balkan possessions of the Roman and later Byzantine Empire. In 441-447 years, the city was destroyed by a tribe of Huns. It was restored only after 100 years, under the Emperor Justinian. In the Middle Ages this area was visited by Pechenegs, Serbs and Hungarians, the knights of the crusading of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. In 1096, during the First Crusade led by Count of Toulouse, the Knights turned Sofia into a military camp.
Importance of the city increased during the national liberation struggle of the Bulgarian people, which took place at the turn of the 18th – 19th centuries. In 1877-1878, was the Russian-Turkish war, as a result Bulgaria was liberated from Turkish yoke. In January 4, 1878 the Russian army came to Sofia. Two years later the Constituent People's Assembly in Veliko - Tarnovo declared it as the capital of Bulgaria. During the Second World War Sofia became the center of the anti-fascist armed struggle of the Bulgarian people. In 1944 the first national-democratic government of the Fatherland Front was formed; in 1946 Bulgaria was proclaimed the People's republic.
